Enhancing the Shelf-Life of Fresh Cassava Roots: A Field Evaluation of Simple Storage Bags

Postharvest physiological deterioration (PPD) of fresh cassava roots limits their shelf-life to about 48 h. There is a demand for simple, cheap, and logistically feasible solutions extending the shelf life in industrial processes. In this study, three different types bag materials were tested, namely woven polypropylene, tarpaulin, jute as potential storage solution with levels mechanical damage. Microclimate related temperature, humidity, carbon di-oxide (CO2) was monitored order understand conditions up 12 days. The results showed that could be stored 8 days, minimal PPD starch loss (2.4%). However, significant damage form cuts breakages had considerably shorter bag, compared whole retained stalk (peduncle) where are connected main plant. Wetting material not factors determining loss. Carbon dioxide concentration stores significantly correlated proposed possible method continuously remotely monitoring large-scale commercial operations reducing postharvest losses.
